When considering my future research interests, the ideas presented by Blee (1998) add another layer to the ethical responsibility of me as a qualitative researcher by examining the role of emotions. My initial reaction to the research was one of shock due to the study examining racist activists. However, thinking about the emotional context in such extreme conditions for the researcher enabled me to think deeply about inner processes and how these might affect the course of the research and the interpretation of data. The interplay of emotions between researcher and subject will shape the knowledge that is constructed. How does the researcher raise the emotional dynamics to a more conscious level for analysis and understanding?
